Our First Girls Empowerment Conference is a Huge Success!

Written by Dena Rutter, April 24th, 2015
girlsempower-website-work1On Saturday, April 18th, more than 60 young women from our programs in East Harlem and the South Bronx attended a full-day event at SCAN’s Johnson Cornerstone Community Center. The day featured a range of workshops geared to promote self-confidence and teach participants how to take action to develop a dream or a vision for their lives.

SCAN’s First Annual Girls Empowerment Conference provided an opportunity for sixty young woman (age 12 to 19) to participate in a variety of age appropriate self-esteem and community-building activities. Four unique workshops during the event, all lead by SCAN staff and volunteers, focused on key issues facing our young women:

Silencing Your Inner Critic So You Can Dream Big — learn how to manage your inner critic to access and convey greater confidence

girlsempower-NYJL-websiteMirror Mirror On The Wall — how to build healthy relationships with other, while staying true to yourself

Y Marks The Spot — gain insight into the minds of male counterparts

TURN UP (Transform, Uplift, Renew, Nurture) — discuss body image and how to care for yourself

And speaking of volunteers, we are very grateful to the New York Junior League’s Done in a Day On-Demand Committee, who provided 20 volunteers to our Girls Empowerment Conference!
